Bedroom Design That's Practical, Functional and Beautiful
Are you one of the those people who have monsters under your bed (and by monsters) I mean random ‘stuff’ that you’ve accumulated over the years and have nowhere else to store it?
As I write this post (August 2022) Al and I are living in a small farm cottage, we’ve been here for 6 years and love it, the only problem with the house is that it lacks storage. The prime realestate under our beds currently house all sorts of ‘monsters’. In Goldie’s room we have a queen sized bed frame and underneath is bags and bags of clothes that don’t fit anymore or clothes that don’t fit yet. Under our bed we have the bassinet attachment for our pram ready for the next babe and other unidentifiable, dust-covered “stuff”.
However, this is all going to change in our new home. If you haven’t caught on yet Al and I are currently building our first family home. The Good Day House is the biggest project we’ve ever tackled and we’re approaching the design and build the same as we do with our furniture.
When it comes to designing and building furniture Al and I always consider practicality, functionality, longevity and aesthetics. Essentially.. we want our furniture to do more than just look good.
And from our sales it shows that our customers too are looking for multifunctional furniture, in particular our drawer beds that capitalise on the prime realestate that often goes unused OR not used well.
The Low Drawer Bed pictured in this post features an extended headboard with floating side tables. By mounting the side tables off the ground, this gave us enough clearance to build 6 drawers in the base, maximising the use of under bed space.
This is the type of design you’ll see throughout our house build (including a version of this bed for our master bedroom). Every inch of space we’ve be asking ourselves… what do we need this room to do for us? How are we going to live in the space now, how about in the future? How can we design and build furniture that will adapt as our family and needs grow?
We cannot wait to take you along for the ride, if you’d like to follow our house build make sure to subscribe to our mailing list and YouTube channel for updates.

We started the room with the Dharma rug from the Slow Weave collection by Rugs For Good. The Slow Weave collection is ethically handmade, GoodWeave Certified and 100% of the profit from each rug sale supports building brighter futures for children in India. Rugs For Good are passionate about supporting education for children and empowering them to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty.
The next step was to bring in our furniture, the Low Drawer Bed with Extended Headboard, Floating Side Tables and matching 6 Drawer Low Boy which are handmade using sustainably sourced VIC Ash.
Next step is to add in our Peacelily mattress, which are made from sustainably harvested 100% natural latex rubber foam. The cover is made from certified organic cotton and they’ve even created a natural latex glue - not only are these mattresses good for the earth, they’re also really bloody comfy!
We styled the bed using linen from the Sage x Clare Celeste collection and for this shoot we chose to layer bold retro prints. You’ll find Unisex Slippers by UGG tucked away in the drawers, a ceramic lamp & jug by local ceramist Takeawei, a bunch of great books and we finished the look with a huge bunch of flowering banksia in the Poet’s Dream Water Jug by Robert Gordon Pottery. For maximum fun you’ll find me wearing Sage x Clare dress & knit and beanie by Bocub.
We hope this bedroom styling inspires you to play around with colour, bold prints and textures!
