In 2016 we were shopping for a bed frame and couldn’t find anything something we loved within our budget. Al is a carpenter so we thought, why not make our own? The day came that we were going to build the bed, and Al was so hungover! We got up and went out to select timber and he spent the day building our bed. He was sick as a dog but at the end of the day he turned to me and said ‘that was the best day’s work I’ve ever done. It was in that moment we knew this is what Al needed to be doing.
We were lucky enough to be asked by Al’s parents to make a bed for them right after ours was complete. This was the inception of our Square Bed. From there, it all happened quite quickly! At the time we were living in a share house in Elwood, Melbourne, so we started to think about moving. There was no way we could afford to rent an inner-city house with enough space to create furniture. Not wanting to move to the suburbs, we looked to the Surf Coast.
We also didn’t want to be the annoying neighbours always using power tools so when we found this little farmhouse in Freshwater Creek, we knew we’d found our new home. We’ve been here since September 2016 and the tree/sea change has been unreal for our creativity, health and productivity. We truly believe our move has really started to help shape our essence as a brand. As we discover our new environment we’re developing our aesthetic and learning new skills.
Our philosophy is simple;
Good Design + Good People
Up until August 2017, Al worked on the business in his spare time and continued to work as a carpenter. It was a good day when he made the switch to working on Al + Imo full-time and a move that came a lot quicker than expected. Al spends his days in his workshop meticulously hand-crafting custom orders. We firmly believe in only making what is needed which is why you won’t find our pieces in shops, one thing we love about our customers is that they are dedicated to sustainable living just like us.
While Al builds, Imogen works behind the scenes - styling, photographing the products and customer communication. We’re at the age now where friends are moving into their first homes and wanting a special piece of forever furniture. It’s really amazing to see the process from; inspiration – design – make – delivery – install! The best thing about this is we’ve been able to make things we would never have considered designing ourselves, every piece we make shapes our style. At this stage our overall style is custom furniture, beautifully crafted by hand with locally sourced materials and if you’re happy, we’re happy!
To suit the purpose of the owner.
Quality locally sourced materials.
Aesthetically in proportion to fit the space it’s moving into.
Easy to put together (most of their beds only require a handful of screws!).
A marriage of form + function.
We’re still in the baby-phase of our business, decisions are made in our lounge-room and deliveries are made by us in our trusty-rusty van Bruce (who doubles as our adventure vehicle). We feel very lucky that we have figured out what we want to do in life… and even luckier that we share the same vision. We are so grateful for everyone who has supported us so far and is following our journey as we stumble along and find our way. We love our customers, who make conscious choices to support small businesses. They invite us into their homes, tell us their stories and offer us tea, coffee, beer - they are dead-set legends and although we spend most weekends driving hours to hand-deliver our furniture we wouldn’t have it any other way.
We want to build beautiful furniture by the sea everyday and surround ourselves with good design and good people.
We dream of buying land and building our own sustainable home with processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient.
We want to grow our conscious community and share our story contributing to a slower lifestyle - one handmade piece at a time.
And above all, choose lifestyle. Because what’s the point of building a life together if you can’t enjoy it?
