Welcome, we’re stoked you’re here.

How it all started… In 2015 we were shopping for a bed frame and couldn’t find anything we loved within our budget. Al is a carpenter so we thought, why not make our own? The day came that we were going to build the bed, and Al was so hungover! We got up and went out to select timber and he spent the day building our bed. He was sick as a dog but at the end of the day he turned to me and said “That was the best day’s work I’ve ever done.” It was in that moment we knew this is what Al needed to be doing.

We were lucky enough to be asked by Al’s parents to make a bed for them right after ours was complete. From there, it all happened quite quickly! At the time we were living in a share house in Elwood, Melbourne, so we started to think about moving. There was no way we could afford to rent an inner-city house with enough space to create furniture. Not wanting to move to the suburbs, we looked to the Surf Coast.

In September 2016 we found a little farmhouse in Freshwater Creek, and knew we’d found our new home. The tree/sea change was amazing for our creativity, health and productivity. We truly believe the move helped shape our essence as a brand, in the new environment we developed our aesthetic and learned new skills.

Our philosophy is simple;

Good Design for Good People

GUMMY BED

Up until August 2017, Al worked on the business in his spare time and continued to work as a carpenter. It was a good day when he made the switch to working on Al + Imo full-time, a move that came a lot quicker than expected. Al spends his days in his workshop meticulously hand-crafting custom orders.

We firmly believe in only making what is needed which is why you won’t find our pieces in shops, one thing we love about our customers is that they are dedicated to sustainable living just like us.

While Al builds, Imogen works behind the scenes - styling, photographing the products and customer communication. We’re at the age now where friends are moving into their first homes and wanting a special piece of forever furniture. It’s really amazing to see the process from; inspiration – design – make – delivery – install! The best thing about this is we’ve been able to make things we would never have considered designing ourselves, every piece we make shapes our style. Our overall style is fucntional bedroom furniture, beautifully crafted by hand.

Good Design

  • To enhance the everyday life of it’s owner

  • Made with quality, locally sourced materials

  • Handcrafted with care

  • Proportionate to fit the space it’s moving into

  • Easy to put together … most of their beds only require a handful of bolts.

Good people

We feel very lucky that we have figured out what we want to do in life… and even luckier that we share the same vision. We are so grateful for everyone who has supported us so far and is following our journey as we stumble along and find our way.

We love our customers, who make conscious choices to support small businesses.

They invite us into their homes, tell us their stories, and offer us tea, coffee, beer - they are dead-set legends and although we spend most weekends driving hours to hand-deliver our furniture we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Our dream?

** I wrote these down in 2016, since then we have ticked a few things off the list.

  • We want to build beautiful furniture by the sea every day and surround ourselves with good design and good people.

  • We dream of buying land and building our own sustainable home with processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient. Check out The Good Day House build.

  • We want to grow our conscious community and share our story contributing to a slower lifestyle - one handmade piece at a time.

  • And above all, choose lifestyle. Because what’s the point of building a life together if you can’t enjoy it?
