How To Make DIY Timber Door Handles

Step by step instructions to easily replace your existing kitchen door handles with handmade timer ones.

We wanted to give our rental kitchen a mini makeover by replacing the metal door handles with beautiful timber ones. We made our door handles out of scrap Victorian Ash hardwood that we had lying around our workshop. This is a super easy, quick and budget-friendly DIY home improvement project that you can whip up in an afternoon.

Enjoy!

step 1.

MEASURE & MAKE NOTES

Measure existing door handles and decide the length you would like to make yours. Also make note of the distance between your screws

step 2.

select your timber

I ripped my Vic Ash Hardwood timber down to 19mm x 19mm, you could easily pick up timber moulding to suit from your local hardware store

Step 3.

ROUT

Using a mushroom router bit I routed the back edge of my rips of timber / this will create the hand pull. (Do a test piece first)

Step 4.

SAND

I sanded all of my sides and edges smooth

Step 5.

CUT

Using a mark on my table saw I cut my pieced to 200mm

Step 6.

sand

Using hand sand paper I sanded my cut edges smooth

Step 7.

MARK & PRE-DRIL

Using my screw measurement from earlier I pre drilled my holes on each piece

Step 8.

SEAL

I used Fiddes Hardwax oil to seal all of my pieces

Step 8.

ATTACH

Once dry I replaced my existing door handled with my new timber ones - making sure to select screws that is the right length
