Illume LED Light Panels - A Sustainable Alternative To Traditional Skylights

In this post, we share information about Illume LED light panels. Why we chose them over regular skylights and answer some frequently asked questions when it comes to installing them in your home.

Our builder Ryan from Sherriff Constructions introduced us to Illumes, and we decided to use them over traditional skylights for a couple of key reasons. First, the way our roof trusses were positioned didn’t allow for traditional skylights to be evenly spread in the space. Also, standard skylights would have penetrated our roof and negatively impacted our energy rating.

Initially, we had doubts about using LED panels instead of skylights. We were skeptical and worried that they might look artificial, however we were really impressed by them and everyone who visited us couldn't believe they weren't real skylights.

Illumes are innovative LED light panels that mimic the appearance of traditional frosted skylights. Each panel is connected to its own individual solar panel mounted on the roof to simulate the brightness of natural sunlight, this was really cool to see once we’d installed them how naturally the light from the Illume mimics the light outside. These panels are incredibly slim, measuring just 10mm in thickness, making them really easy to install.

For our house, we selected the 400 x 1200 panels and placed four of them in our open-plan living, dining, and kitchen areas. To maintain a seamless look, we decided to recess them with a timber frame around the edges. Another standout feature of Illumes is that you can cover them with your roof insulation, so you don’t need to worry about any energy leakage like you would from traditional skylights.
